What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are a type of restoration recommended when teeth are too badly damaged to be repaired by a filling. Crowns “cap” your teeth, covering the entire visible tooth to restore its original size and shape as well as its strength, appearance and function. Crowns are frequently made of porcelain to provide a natural-looking final result but may also be made of gold or another metal.

When are dental crowns provided?

Our dentists may recommend a dental crown to:

  • Anchor a dental bridge
  • Complete a dental implant
  • Improve a misshapen tooth
  • Improve the appearance of your smile
  • Protect a tooth after a root canal
  • Strengthen fractured or weakened teeth
  • Support teeth with large fillings and little remaining natural tooth structure

How long does a dental crown treatment take?

Most crowns require two appointments to complete. At the first appointment, our dentists will take impressions and prepare your tooth for the crown. A temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth between appointments. At the second appointment, our dentists will check that the crown fits and bond it permanently into place to complete your treatment. This process usually takes about two weeks.
